Notice Board

On this page we will put important items, which may relate to the specific surgeries, or to the Healthcare Group as a whole. We will also include here important medical issues on the Island and in the UK or globally. For example, we would have mentioned here the withdrawal of the anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx.

The most recent items will appear at the top of the page, and the older items will slide down to make room for the new items. Please feel free to e-mail  us with your comments.

January 2007

The HSSD have taken over SOME of the Childhood Immunisations. The arrangement for the immunisations up to Pre-school have not changed - they will still be carried out by the Surgery. The Pre-school immunisations and the teenage (or school leaving) immunisations will now be done by the HSSD. If you have any questions about the new arrangements then please ring the surgery for the immunisations up to pre-school, and the Health Visitors for the pre-school and teen=age immunisations. PLEASE NOTE that if you choose to have the pre-school and teenage immunisation carried out by the Practice Nurse at the surgery, then you can but you will be charged for this (prior to this, HSSD used to pay for it.)

December 2006

The Partners, all the Staff and everyone at Healthcare would like to say

A very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year

November 2006

New childhood immunisations have been brought in. In the past, the eight, twelve and sixteen week baby vaccinations were all the same. Now that the pneumococcal vaccine has been introduced, there have been a few changes. The vaccinations will still be given at eight, twelve and sixteen weeks. The full schedule is on our Child Health Page, and there is also an explanation of all the vaccines there. We will also be running a catch up campaign for all under two year old children. If you have any questions about all this then please visit the NHS Immunisation web site, and if you are still not sure then please ring the surgery or discuss this with the Health Visitors.

We are very sorry to say that Dr King is currently off sick. While he is away, Dr Andrews will be seeing his patients. We wish Dr King a speedy recovery.

October 2006

Flu Vaccination. The flu vaccination season is upon us, and we have now got some of the Vaccines in stock. This years vaccine will protect against the following three influenza viruses: A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) - like virus, A/Wisconsin/67/2005(H3N3) - like virus and B/Malaysia/2506/2004 - like virus. Please note that the flu vaccine will not give protection against the avian flu (or H5N1) strain. The virus yet has to make the transition to allow human to human transmission. The following people should have a flu vaccination:

All those over 65, all those over 6 months with chronic long standing heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, asthma, diabetes, renal and liver disease, immune-suppression (for what ever cause). Patients living in long stay residential care homes should have the vaccine. Carers and Healthcare Workers should also have them.

July 2006

Smoking Ban. We are sure that you will all be aware of the new legislation banning smoking in enclosed public places. Some will be very pleased, and others will be no doubt upset with this move. We mention it here, as we would like to draw to your attention the following places and web sites where you can turn to for help to stop smoking.

Quitline is a local organisation set up to offer help, advice and support to all those who want to stop smoking. There phone number is 233170, and they are very happy to help in any way they can. There are also a number of web sites which people can look to for information and advice about smoking and stopping. Some of these are listed on our Links Page.

See the TV Advert of mother of two Trudi, who was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 38 after twenty five years of smoking, and the effect it had on her daughters Kia (age 11) and Kirsty (age 21).

Finally, if you would like to come and see your own General Practitioner to get some help, advice and support to stop smoking, then please ring the surgery and make an appointment.

April 2006

Sleep Clinics. We have now set up a Sleep Clinic at Cobo, Rohais, and St Martins. This is run by one of the nurses at each Surgery. They have been set up to help patients  overcome sleeping problems in a variety of ways. We hope that this will mean that we are able to use less sleeping tablets. If you have a problem with sleeping, then please ring the Surgery and ask to see the nurse in the Sleep Clinic.

March 2006

We are pleased to announce that we have extended the opening hours at the Pier Steps Surgery in Boots the Chemists. The surgery is now open all day on Monday and Friday, and will be open for the mornings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please click on the link to go to the Pier Steps Surgery page.

January 2006

Dr Brand will now be working half time. This means that he will change the way in which he works, and in the first instance he will be covering Sabbatical leave for some of the other Partners. We are very pleased to say that his patients will be looked after initially by Dr Donald Murray. If you have any questions about this then please ring the Rohais Health Centre and the staff will be happy to advise you. Dr Murray will be based at the Rohais, and Dr Brand will be move around between the three main surgeries.

All NHS Hospitals in London are now Smoke Free. The Government has set a target to make the whole of the NHS Smoke Free by the end of 2006. They have started in London, and there can be little doubt that all the staff and patients will benefit greatly from the project. You can read more at the following web site www.SmokeFreeLondon.org

Dr Partridge became a Partner. Whilst he used to work at all three Surgeries, from now on he will be based full time at the Rohais.

Lynne Mc Lagan was appointed as our new Practice Manger. We are delighted to welcome her to the Practice. We feel that there are a lot of changes due to occur in General Practice both on the Island and Nationally which make this a very exciting time. We are striving to increase the level of service that we provide to our patients, and Lynne will be instrumental in making sure that we continue to provide the best possible service and achieve the high standards we aspire towards. She can be contacted via the Rohais Surgery (Telephone 723322 or Fax 725200) or by e-mail Manager@HealthcareGroup.CO.UK

December 2005

The Partners and Staff of the Healthcare Group would just like to say:

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

July 2005

There has been a slight change around with Doctors at the Rohais. We are pleased to say that Ed Partridge will now be permanently based at the Rohais. Dr Andrews has decided to reduce his hours, and so he will move around between Cobo, Rohais and St Martins to help out when needed. If you would like to see a particular Doctor then please let the staff know when you make the appointment.

The Social Security Authority have agreed to pay the twelve pound grant towards the cost of consultations in the Accident and Emergency Department. Patients who have been seen there recently will notice that this has been deducted from the cost.

Well done to the Guernsey Island Games Team. Congratulations to all those who took part and well done to all the medal winners. Guernsey toped the Medal Table with 40 Gold, 38 Silver and 29 Bronze Medals.

May 2005

This month saw the launch of our new web site on the 5 May 2005. We hope that you will find it useful, and we would value your comments and suggestions.

April 2005

The States of Guernsey agreed to ban smoking in public places. This follows on the trend being set in many countries now such as Ireland and New Zealand. There will no doubt need to be some time allowed to draft the legislation and allow for change to take place, but we hope that this will reduce the problems with passive smoking and the risk to employees who work in what, at the moment, are smoky environments. It will not be popular with some people, but it is felt that it will reduce the number of people with cancer related to smoking.
