CAA Medicals

Two of the Doctors at Cobo are authorised to carry out CAA Medicals. They are Dr Peter Biggins and Dr Ian Gee. They are able to carry out medicals for Commercial Pilots (Class One) and Private Pilots (Class Two). Please note, however, that all Initial Class One Medicals have to be carried out by the CAA Medical Division at Gatwick. Initial Class Two Medicals can be carried out locally. We can also carry out the medicals for Air Traffic Controllers.

New JAA Medical Validity

The JAA have now introduced a few changes to the validity dates for the Medical Certificates. This now distinguishes between Single and Multi Pilot Commercial Crew. Single Crew over the age of 40 will still have to have six monthly medicals. Multi-pilot Crew over the age of 40, however, will now not have to have a medical every six months - they will need to be seen every year. Please see the table below for the new arrangements, and if there are any problems or questions then please either consult the CAA Website or the JAA Website or ring the surgery (01481 256404).

AME On-Line System

Both Dr Biggins and Dr Gee use the AME On-Line system. This means that they are able to log into the CAA Computer at Gatwick and enter the details from the Medical Examination directly onto the computer as the medical is done. The system can also print out the Application Form with a lot of your details already completed. This will make it easier for you to complete the form. Other advantages of the system are that there is now very little paperwork that has to be sent to Gatwick, and this should make us more efficient. It also means that at the end of the medical, your certificate will be printed from the CAA computer, and it will therefore ensure that all the details are synchronised, accurate and up to date. One small drawback can be that if you have had a medical with a lot of additional elements (e.g. audiogram, ECG, vision check) then this can take a little longer to enter all the details onto the Computer. We cannot issues the certificate until all the details are on and acceptable.

Eye Sight Tests and Forms

There are essentially two forms for eye sight tests, and we have sent a supply of these to all the opticians on the Island. For your convenience they can also be downloaded below. They are available on the CAA Web Site.

Class One (Commercial Pilots) who wear glasses / contact lenses or who require an eye sight test will need to see the optician. Please click here to link to the relevant form.

Class Two (Private Pilots) will need to have an extended Eye Examination carried out before they are seen for their Initial Medical. Please click here to link to the relevant form.

Commercial Pilots (Class One)

At each medical you will be required to complete the Medical Questionnaire and Declaration form. You will then be seen by the nurse. All Class One Medicals require a blood test at each visit. We now have a haemaglobinometer and so this can be done on a finger prick test and the result is available immediately. On some occasions, you may be required to have a cholesterol test as well. This will have to be sent to the Pathology Lab. You may also be required to have some additional tests with the nurse. This may include an ECG and an Audiogram to check your hearing. There is a table at the bottom of this page which shows what tests have to be done when. There is a copy of this table on your Medical Certificate as well. After this you will need to see the doctor. He will require a urine sample so please make sure that you will be able to provide this ! The reception desk have a supply of bottles. At the end of the Medical the doctor will print out your Medical Certificate and this will tell you when your next medical is due. Please also note that if you have a Class One Medical Certificate, you can use it for Class Two privileges and validities.

Please note that under JAR's (Joint Aviation Regulations) your certificate is not valid once you get past the date your next medical was due. You can, however, renew the Medical up to 45 days before it is due to expire, and it will not shorten the validity. If there are any problems then please let us know.

Private Pilots (Class Two)

As with your commercial colleagues, at each medical you will be required to complete the Medical Questionnaire and Declaration form. There is no requirement to have a regular blood test (unless you have not been well in which case one may be required) and if you do not need an ECG or Audiogram, you will not need to see the Nurse. You may require a blood test for your first medical after your fortieth birthday. Please ask if you are not sure. If this is your initial examination, then you will need to see the Optician before you come for your medical to get your eyes tested. The opticians have a form which they will need to complete. When you ring to make the appointment, tell them it is for a CAA medical and then they will be able to make the necessary arrangements. You will not need to have an audiogram carried out unless you have an Instrument Rating on your licence.

Air Traffic Controllers

Despite the fact that when JAR's were introduced it was originally intended to get the Air Traffic Controllers onto them as well as the pilots, this has still not happened yet. You will therefore still need medicals in accordance with the previous CAA regulations, and so this will be a Class One Medical. At the present time, therefore, you do not need to have any blood tests unless there has been any change or problems since your last medical that may indicate that one should be carried out. There is a table of the bottom of this page that shows when ECG's and Audiograms will be required.

The Safety Regulation Group at the CAA has a comprehensive Web Site. Please see our Links Page  for this. If there is anything that you are not sure about then please ask and we will be happy to try and help.
