Nurse Services

We aim to provide the very best care for all our patients. Please note that not all the services listed below are available at all the Health Centres, so please check when you make the appointment if you are not sure.

General Nursing Consultations

The nurses at each of the Surgeries will be happy to see you with any problems or conditions that you feel they would be able to help with. They are also happy to offer advice on a wide range of topics and illnesses.

Asthma Advice

If you feel that your asthma is not so well controlled, or if you have a problem with your inhalers, then you can make an appointment with the nurse to discuss this.

Blood Tests

The nurses now carry out all the blood tests for our patients except those on Warfarin, who can attend the INR Clinic at the Pathology Lab in the Hospital. Some tests will need you to fast before you have them done. This means that you will not be able to have anything to eat or drink except water for 10 hours before the test. If you are not sure if you need to fast, then please ask at the time you book the appointment.

Childhood Immunisations

It is important that all children are immunised in accordance with the current schedules. This is outlined on the Child Health Page. The first set of immunisations are at eight, twelve and sixteen weeks of age. There is a schedule in the Green Child Health Booklet that you will be given, and the Health Visitors will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about this. We operate a computerised recall system for these and will endeavour to get in touch with you when the next immunisations are due.

Diabetic Advice

If you have a problem with your diabetes and you would like to discuss your medication, blood sugar levels or diet, then you can come and discuss this with the nurse.

Dressings

If you need to have a dressing on a wound or ulcer then the nurses will be happy to help with this. There are a huge range of dressings, some of which are medicated, to help with a wide range of conditions.

ECG

If your Doctor feels that you need an ECG (Electrocardiogram or tracing of the heart) they will ask you to see the nurse for this to be done. We cannot do exercise or 24 hours ECG recording at the Surgeries. We will arrange for this to be done at the hospital if it is necessary.

Injections

If you require regular medication by injection, then the nurses will be happy to do this for you. This may include vitamins, contraceptive medication and heparin.

Sleep Clinics

We have now set up Sleep Clinics at Cobo, Rohais, and St Martins. If you have a problem sleeping, then there are a lot of things that can be done, or you can do, to help with the situation. A lot of people working in demanding or stressful jobs may not sleep as well as they would like to. This can result in tiredness and poor concentration during the day which can in turn affect performance. By attending the Sleep Clinic we hope that we will be able to help with this problem in an holistic way, and we hope that this will mean patients can get over the problem without he need to have long term sleeping tablets.

Teenage Health Checks

Once again, this is a good opportunity to have a health check up and receive the final childhood vaccinations. We recall all teenagers aged 16 and so we will try and contact you when this is due. It is a good opportunity to discuss any problems or worries with the nurse.

Travel Advice and Immunisations

If you are going away and you are not sure if you will need any immunisations or malaria medication, then you should make an appointment to see the nurse. It may be that the travel agent or travel company will advise you on what you need, and some countries have legal requirements to be complied with in which case you may need a certificate to prove you have been immunised. Some immunisations need to have a course of injections, so we would strongly advise you to see the nurse as soon as you have planned your trip to ensure that there will be time to complete the recommenced course.

Weight and Dietary Advice

There are so many books and different diets to follow these days if you want to try and lose some weight and it can all be very confusing. If you would like some advice about your diet, or on losing some weight, then please come and see one of the nurses.

Well Man Checks

Like the Well Woman Checks, Well Man Checks are to try and detect any problems before they have become significant so that they can be treated. You will be able to have your blood pressure checked, your cholesterol level measured and discuss your risk factors with the nurse.

Well Woman Checks

One of the important areas we try and focus on is preventative medicine. It is therefore a good idea to have a regular health check up, and this can be timed with your cervical smears. These should be carried out every three years (unless you have been told otherwise). We operate a computerised recall system and will try and get in touch with you to remind you when your next smear is due. It is best taken in the middle of your cycle (which is usually two weeks after your last period).
